I was merrily computing along when suddenly everything closed and only the desktop was displayed, sans icons. Of course, I went to the old new standby: ctrl+alt+del. When I got there, I decided to go out on a limb on a whim and click File>New Task (Run...) and typed in "explorer.exe"
Voila! Problem solved. A little victory for esoteric rarely-used computer knowledge!
I don't think "esoteric" is completely the right word...
